07 Mar Clean Water, Healthier Lives: The Impact of a New Well in Chevreau Lombard

Access to clean water is one of the most powerful ways to improve community health. In the rural Haitian community of Chevreau Lombard, a new well installed by the Good Shepherd Foundation is already making a measurable difference.
The well was inaugurated on November 10, 2025, with the goal of addressing a serious challenge faced by the community: widespread waterborne infections caused by unsafe drinking water. Early health data now shows that the project is having a meaningful impact.
Measuring the Impact
Before the well was installed, local clinic records showed a high number of waterborne infection cases during the first four months of 2025:
- January: 279 cases
- February: 238 cases
- March: 239 cases
- April: 221 cases
This totaled 977 cases in just four months.
Following the well’s installation, the clinic tracked infection rates from November 2025 through February 2026:
- November: 137 cases
- December: 122 cases
- January: 125 cases
- February: 113 cases
During this period, 497 cases were recorded.
A 45% Reduction in Waterborne Illness
Comparing these two periods shows a reduction of more than 45% in waterborne infections within the community.
This dramatic decline highlights the importance of reliable access to clean water. When families no longer need to rely on contaminated sources such as rivers or surface water, the risk of illness drops significantly—especially for children and older adults who are often the most vulnerable.
More Than Just a Well
The well in Chevreau Lombard represents more than infrastructure. It represents:
- Healthier families
- Fewer preventable illnesses
- Less strain on the local medical clinic
- More time for children to attend school instead of recovering from illness
It is also a powerful reminder that relatively simple solutions can produce life-changing results.
Continuing the Mission
The Good Shepherd Foundation’s work in Haiti includes providing medical care, clean water wells, and sanitation solutions such as latrines to underserved communities. Projects like the Chevreau Lombard well demonstrate how targeted investments can quickly improve quality of life.
With continued support, the foundation hopes to bring similar improvements to many more communities that still lack safe water.
Clean water saves lives—and this well is already proving it.
